9 May 1947 Mr. Osmond Hyde 44 Baltimore Street Kensington, Maryland Bear Ozzie— I have read your letters with much interest and they have thrown considerable light on the situation. I think I understand it fully. I have never doubted for a moment that you were doing all you reasonably could to work matters out. We have done all that we could do from this end other than to put in a personal call to the Attorney General. When I talked to you last you will recall that I intended to have a personal talk with the Attorney General, but Willis, who has been energetically and whole-heartedly working for our interests, seemed to think that the call should more properly come from Mr. Keenan. Consequently, we called Murphy, Keenan's law partner, explaining the situation to him and we relied upon his promis to either have Mr. Keenan talk to the Attorney General or obtain Mr. Keenan's permission for him to talk to the Attorney General. It was shortly after that that the adverse report came through. I don't suppose there has ever been a case when suoh a determined appeal has been made for assistance as in your case. In addition to the calls that I put in for you, Willie at his owm personal expense has placed at least three calls. I have not given up yet. Every few weeks we are informed in general terms that Luke and Mr. Keenan will leave for Tokyo within a few weeks. Probably they will come during June. I am confident that after Mr. Keenan's arrival here I can get his approval of the following plan: Sol will meet likely be given a leave of absence to return to the United States for 30-60 days. He has an entre into the Department of Justice, and with Captain Lea here can work without restrictions or limitations of any kind. Yesterday a letter was re¬ceived from Gus Vanish in which he promised Willie in a general way to do anything that he could for us. This statement had no relation to your problem, and I do not know that Vanish knows of your problem. In other words, if we time our action properly I think it can still be worked out.
