MEMORANDUM
14 June 1946
FROM: DOCUMENT DIVISION
TO: LEGAL STAFF, I.P.S.
SUBJECT: USE OF SCANNERS
1.In the past, the practice of making direct requests for scanning, translation, or interpretation to the Japanese nationals, - without previously contacting the officer in charge of their section, - has led to unfortunate delays in certain priority documents being scanned and to confusion in assignments.
2.Attorneys in need of scanners are requested to advise one of the following officers of their needs:
Room 365Lt. Wilds
(Ext. #239)Lt. Blumhagen
Room 337Lt. Goldstein
(Ext. #237)Lt. Kobayashi
3.Scanners desired for a period of one day or longer should arrange with Mr. W. H. Wagner, Room 363, Ext. #108.
4.It is again pointed out that these scanners are to be used only to indicate to the attorneys, orally or by written summary, those parts of interest to their case, and to list or mark such parts for later translation and processing by the translation pool and duplicating unit through Mr. Albert Williams. (Subject to the realization that frequent literal translations of short passages may be needed where exact phrasing is decisive to determine relativity.)
