The Hyde situation got in a terrible snarl, first, due to Hyde's position. Then, the Department of Justice cooperated very fully and by going to the high-level we worked out a definite deal for Hyde's return and we advised you to that effect. Then, someone turned over the applecart and the Department of Justice reversed itself and refused to release Hyde. We went hack to the high-level but got into additional controversy and we were unable to get Hyde's release, so I had to advise you yesterday that he would he unable to return to Tokyo. I hope my wife will he able to join me in about two weeks and if so, we are going to ask Mrs. Tavenner to come up and spend a few days with us. I am very anxious to meet her. If there is anything I can do for you or Mrs. Tavenner here, don't hesitate to call on me. All of us here were very fond of Bob Wiley for the short time we saw him. He is a grand fellow.
