Report prepared for the Foreign Economic Administration by a member of the staff of the United States Tariff Commission. This study focuses on the Hides and Skins, Tanning Materials, Leather and Leather Manufactures in Japan's economy. Entered as Defense Document 500-A-16. Handwritten note states "Reproduce all. Smith." Gives an historic overview of how, under normal trade circumstances, "the leather industry was dependent on foreign sources for supply." Gives detailed figures for net imports over various years. Finds that the "continued existence of the Japanese leather and leather goods industries appears essential to the Japanese economy." Advises how to revive and sustain the exports of leather industry to China and other Asiatic countries in order to rebuild the economy.
