QUESTIONNAIRE
P.O.W. – THE FORMER CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER OF THE 1ST ARMY GROUP OF THE KWANTUNG ARMY. MAJOR GENERAL (MED.) KIYOSHI KAWASHIMA. AT KHABAROVSK ON SEPTEMBER 12TH, 1946.
The witness was told beforehand that he would be held responsible under Art. 95 of the U.S.S.R. Criminal Code if he made any false statements.
Q. Was ISHII unit using any laboratory or patients’ accommodations in other hospitals other than the facilities of the unit itself?
A. A detachment from the ISHII unit was stationed in the city of Harbin, which included sanitation, water supply and medical units. I know that these units were located adjoining to the Japanese Military Hospital near the Russian cemetery on Tai-tung Street of Harbin city.
Q. What were the duties of these units?
A. The function of the Medical Unit was practically the same as that of the other hospitals except that its main duties were directed to the research of contagious diseases.
Q. What sort of experiments were made upon the infectious cases? How many of these patients were there?
A. Most of the patients were Japanese. When I was on duty with the ISHII Unit, this department was making researches in medical treatment of bacillus carriers of typhoid and paratyphus.
Q. Who was the chief of this department when you were on duty with the unit?
A. It was Lt. Colonel NAGAYAMA. He is now a colonel.
Q. From when to when was Lt. Colonel NAGAYAMA on duty with the department?
A. I don’t know from when he was on duty, but I think he served in the department until the termination of the war.
Q. Do you know Lt. General KAJITSUKA, Ryuji, A.M.C.?
A. Yes, I know him well.
