Pact Breakers Must be Tried, Keenan Asserts
TOKYO, Jan. 9 (AP) – Responsibility for treaties and covenants goes beyond the nation which signs them, Joseph B. Keenan, Gen. MacArthur’s war crimes prosecutor, said today as he prepared to begin the trials of former Premier Hideki Tojo and other top suspects about March 1.
Individuals who violate such agreements and cause war should be brought to justice, he stated adding:
“Nations alone don’t keep or break treaties, it is the people within in the nations who have control and who force such acts. Our prosecution will be based on the theory that these persons are punishable for their crimes.”
