To Quizz Ex-POW’s in U. S.
Eight officers of SCAP’s Legal Section left by air to undertake the questioning of nearly 9,000 former American prisoners of war now in the United States. All information they obtain may be used as evidence against war criminals in Japan and the Philippines.
Results of the investigation are expected to supplement the testimony of approximately 92 former prisoners of war who will return to Japan to act as witnesses.
All eight officers headed by Lieutenant Edmund M. Sweeny, are subject to discharge under the readjustment program, but have volunteered to supervise the interrogation work. They were chosen on the basis of long service and familiarity with the war crimes charges.
