Woman Says Head Slapper is Sane Man
Shumei Okawa, war crimes defendant who slapped Tojo on the head in court, is not insane, according to a Japanese woman interviewed by Jiji Press service. Okawa, who was called “mentally sick” by Chief Justice Webb in excusing him from the prisoners docket, is in a Tokyo hospital.
Mrs. Nami Ohashi, a hotel operator, told Jiji that Okawa used to patronize a “machiai” formerly owned by her, and that she has observed him and thinks he is not mentally deranged.
She alleges that it was not unusual for Okawa to hit a man on the head as far back as 15 or 16 years ago. According to Jiji, Mrs. Ohashi may be a witness at the war crimes trials.
