Memorandum to Mr. Tavenner - continued: 4.
The Defense attempted a similar deprecation (Summation document 3101-A, pages 1A and 1B) of an article of the March 1938 issue of “Contemporary Japan” (Exhibit 3596A) saying that an article in English for American reader-ship could not have been calculated to influence the Japanese thought. This contention completely ignores the fact that the article in question was introduced in evidence as an extract from a Japanese original document (Exhibit for identification No. 2596), which is a book printed in Japanese and entitled “The Agent of War” and which is a republication of a series of lectures, articles, and speeches given by SHIRATORI. Thus, far from being an article addressed to a comparatively few English speaking people, the article was republished along with other articles and speeches in Japanese in April 1941 for the purpose, the Prosecution charge, of solidifying the Japanese behind the recently concluded Tripartite Pact with the Axis.
