Born in 1883; died in 1976. Authorized the naval attacks in December 1941 (Pearl Harbor). Admiral in the Japanese Imperial Navy during World War II. Minister of the Navy from October 18, 1941 until July 17, 1944. Served as Naval Chief of Staff from February 21, 1944 until July 17, 1944. Charged with War Crimes and tried by the International Military Tribunal for the Far East (IMTFE) after the war. His defense team consisted of Edward P. McDermott, E. Richard Harris, John G. Brannon, Yoshitsugu Takahashi, Juzo Yamana, Isamu Suzuki, Masajiro Takigawa, Shimao Iwai, Shigeo Yasuda, Hisashi Saito, and Hachiro Okuyama. Convicted on counts 1, 27, 29, 31, 32 and sentenced to life in prison. He was paroled in 1955.
